First Principles: Why Space Actually Makes Perfect Sense
Let's start with the fundamentals, because this is where the case for space-based data centers becomes genuinely compelling.
Every data center requires three core inputs: power, cooling, and compute hardware. On Earth, two of these three are horrifically expensive and getting worse. In space, through basic physics, two of these three become dramatically cheaper. That asymmetry is what's driving all this excitement.

From pure first principles, space-based data centers aren't just viable – they're superior in nearly every dimension.
The Uncomfortable Question: If It's So Good, Why Hasn't It Happened Yet?
This is where we need to shift from physics to economics, from first principles to unit economics. And this is where the analysis gets uncomfortable for the enthusiasts.
Launch Costs: The Bottleneck That's (Maybe) Breaking

Drop launch costs to $200/kg – which is SpaceX's stated goal with Starship at scale – and suddenly you're at $810 per kilowatt-year. Now we're potentially competitive, depending on how much you're paying for power on Earth.
The question isn't whether $200/kg launch costs are possible. SpaceX's entire business model assumes they are. The question is when, and at what scale, and whether they arrive before or after the next breakthrough in battery technology that makes 24/7 solar+storage competitive on Earth.

The Thermal Reality Check
Let's address the elephant in the vacuum: can you actually cool enough compute in space to make this worthwhile?
The skeptics love to point at thermal constraints as a show-stopper. And they're not entirely wrong – managing heat in space is harder than on Earth in absolute terms. But this misses the crucial insight: it's not about absolute difficulty, it's about mass and complexity.

Will you need radiation-hardened chips? Some shielding? Error correction for bit flips? Yes. Google tested their Tensor Processing Units in proton beams and concluded the error rates were acceptable. Neural networks, with their massively parallel architecture and inherent redundancy, are actually somewhat robust against random bit flips. Not immune, but tolerant enough that it's an engineering challenge, not a fundamental blocker.
The Bandwidth Paradox
Here's where the business model starts showing cracks.
Satellite-to-Earth links currently operate around 1 gigabit per second. Ground-based data center interconnects operate at over 1 terabit per second. That's a thousand-fold difference.
This creates a profound constraint: space-based compute only makes sense for workloads where the amount of computation vastly exceeds the amount of data transfer. SpaceX + xAI + Tesla (+ Starlink) creates a vertically integrated stack that's genuinely unprecedented:

- xAI provides the AI workloads that justify the infrastructure

Launch costs are falling, but so are battery costs. Lithium-ion batteries have decreased in price by roughly 97% since 1991. Solid-state batteries and other next-generation technologies promise further improvements.
If battery costs drop faster than launch costs, the 24/7 solar advantage in space diminishes dramatically. You just build bigger solar farms on Earth, store energy in increasingly cheap batteries, and avoid the complexity of space operations entirely.
Most papers comparing space-based vs. Earth-based economics hold battery costs constant while assuming launch costs fall. That's methodologically suspect. The real question is the relative rate of improvement.
The Regulatory and Political Risk
Bernie Sanders calling for a moratorium on new data centers is a canary in the coal mine. As AI automation affects employment, political opposition to data centers will intensify. NIMBYism is already a real constraint on ground-based facilities.

For AI Companies
You need to be planning for a multi-cloud reality that includes orbital infrastructure. Even if you don't deploy to space yourself, your competitors might, creating cost structure advantages you'll need to match.
